For part 7 of our ‘best football kits’ series we go to Hull City. This traditional club is attracting great attention worldwide due to the possible rebranding – renaming into Hull Tigers. An idea from the current owner.

26kits supports the Hull City fans in their #saynotohulltigers campaign and hope it will be a succesful one.

For this kit interview we got answers from James, Les and Andy.

They have been asked the following questions:

  • Since when do you follow Hull City?
  • Why did you become a Hull City fan?
  • What clubs, other than Hull City, do you support?
  • What is your best Hull City moment ever?
  • Do you have any dream or wish in relation to Hull City?
  • What is your favorite Hull City home shirt?
  • What is your favorite Hull City away shirt?

The first to answer is James Greenwood. James is one of the fans behind the Hull City Kits website.

Since when do you follow Hull City?
I was born in 1978 – and whilst I don’t know my exact first game, it’ll have been in the mid 1980s.

Why did you become an Hull City fan?
I’m a Hull man by birth and grew up being able to see the floodlight pylons from my bedroom window. I fell in love very quickly.

What clubs, other than Hull City, do you support?
It’s fashionable to say this I guess but I’m a Barcelona follower. I had the kit as a young boy and spent time in Spain which meant they became my second team. I went to Barca on my stag do and love being in that city.

What is your best Hull City moment ever?
Winning the play off final in 2008. Hull City winning at Wembley? Yes!

Do you have any dream or wish in relation to Hull City?
That we retain our name. I hate the current application to rebrand the club with a passion. We’re Hull City AFC – since 1904. I hope that tradition is the winner.

What is your favorite Hull City home shirt?
In all honesty, there’s too much red in this kit but look how happy 9 year old me is. I love that I loved it.

The best Hull City kits according to James

What is your favorite Hull City away shirt?
Umbro, 2008. All white. Lovely.

How many Hull City shirts do you have?
20+

What is your favourite 2013/14 shirt, other than Hull City?
I don’t think it’s a great season for kits this year but I do like the West Ham away kit. Reminds of the kit they had in the 1980s but still modern. Nice.

What is your favourite ‘all time’ shirt, other than Hull City?
The first World Cup I can remember is 1986. The England kit from that campaign still has a place in my heart!

Say no to Hull Tigers

Next is Les Motherby. Les is involved in the City Till We Die / #saynotohulltigers campaign and also the site Hull City Kits.

Since when do you follow Hull City?
I saw my first Hull City game in January 1983 when I was 6 years old, but by then I already had a replica shirt. Admiral were the first kit maker to supply true replica Tigers shirts, so their amber with red pinstripes home shirt was my first.

Why did you become an Hull City fan?
Before my birth, my father had moved the family to be close to Boothferry Park, Hull City’s home ground, so in a family of fans living in the shadow of the stadium floodlights, there was never any doubt I was going to be a Tigers fan!

What clubs, other than Hull City, do you support?
I am a bit of a groundhopper and travel around Europe to watch games several times a year, when Hull City’s fixtures permit. I have developed soft spots for Feyenoord, Borussia Dortmund and RC Lens.

What is your best Hull City moment ever?
It took 104 years for Hull City to qualify for the top division, but when they finally managed the feat, it was spectacular, winning at Wembley with local hero Dean Windass scoring a beautiful goal.

Do you have any dream or wish in relation to Hull City?
Right now, just that we get to stay as Hull City. Our owner wants to change the name to Hull Tigers, and most fans oppose this as we love the club’s identity and tradition. The club have applied to the Football Association to change in time for next season, and the City Till We Die group are encouraging fans to tell the FA to reject the application.

Identity is a huge part of football, and fans from across the world have sent messages supporting the campaign. I’ve supported Hull City all of my life, and I want to keep supporting Hull City. Hull Tigers? I don’t know them. The Tigers is a great and much loved nickname, but the City part of our name is loved too and what most fans use to identify the club to each other.

What is your favorite Hull City home shirt?
My favourite style of Hull City kit is with striped shirts, that’s how we got our nickname. The adidas shirt from 1980-1982 is just perfect, thick stripes, no sponsor, the old school adidas trefoil logo, it’s just perfect.

Top Hull City shirs according to Les

What is your favorite Hull City away shirt?
All white is our traditional away kit, and the best example of this was the 2007/2008 Umbro shirt. All white looks classy, and there was just the right amount of amber and black trim to identify it as a Hull City shirt.

How many Hull City shirts do you have?
I have 35 match worn and match issued shirts, mostly Hull City from 1979 to this season (I recently picked up the shirt Curtis Davies wore in a win against West Ham at the KC Stadium), around 70 Hull City replicas and a glut of other shirts that have taken my fancy.

What is your favorite 2013/14 shirt, other than Hull City?
I think the yellow and blue Juventus away kit looks great, the subtle black and white trim on the shirt elevates it above Arsenal’s similar looking away kit I think.

What is your favorite ‘all time’ shirt, other than Hull City?
I adore the 1988-1990 West Germany home shirt by adidas. The abstract flag pattern looked remarkably futuristic back then, and it still looks great now. When a chance to own a matchworn Thomas Hassler shirt arose, even though my wallet was screaming, I had to have it. It takes pride of place in a room that is otherwise a Hull City shirt museum.

And last in this Hull City kit interview is Andy Clark. Andy is helping with the Hull City Southern Supporters website.

Since when do you follow Hull City?
As a regular supporter, since 1990, although my first game was in 1979.

Why did you become an Hull City fan?
Because they are my hometown club.

What clubs, other than Hull City, do you support?
No other clubs.

What is your best Hull City moment ever?
When we won the play-off final in 2008 to take us into the Premier League for the first time in our history.

Do you have any dream or wish in relation to Hull City?
I would like to see us play in Europe.

What is your favorite Hull City home shirt?
The Hull City shirt from 1990-91, Matchwinner brand.

The best Hull City kit according Andy

What is your favorite Hull City away shirt?
1997-98, Superleague brand, this is the best photo I can find:

How many Hull City shirts do you have?
Not many, four or five I think.

What is your favorite 2013/14 shirt, other than Hull City?
No favourites this season. I don’t even like Hull City’s all that much!

What is your favorite ‘all time’ shirt, other than Hull City?
Newcastle United in the 1970s had good shirts.
