Ajax Amsterdam is number 3 in this new series on 26kits.com

After the best Arsenal kits and the best Liverpool kits (according to several fans and bloggers) we now go to Holland and asked some Ajax writers and fans several questions about their club and best kits.

All fans must be excited after yesterdays win over Roda JC. Two late goals from 17 year old sub Jaïro Riedewald deliverd Ajax Amsterdam the Dutch league lead and winter title. Where most European top clubs bring in expensive players, Ajax is going back to their roots and the club’s philosophy of developing young and talented players. That’s what makes the club big n Europe and the world. That’s why so many famous players did wear the Ajax shirt during their success in football world wide.

We have asked the following questions:

  • Since when do you follow Ajax?
  • Why did you become an Ajax fan?
  • What clubs, other than Ajax, do you support?
  • What is your best Ajax moment ever?
  • Do you have any dream or wish in relation to Ajax?
  • What is your favorite Ajax home shirt?
  • What is your favorite Ajax away shirt?
  • How many Ajax shirts do you have?
  • What is your favorite 2013/14 shirt, other than Ajax?
  • What is your favorite ‘all time’ shirt, other than Ajax?

Since when do you follow Ajax?
My oldest Ajax memories are from early 1983. I first attended an Ajax game in September of the same year. I was eight years old. Thirty years, man. Thirty years.

Why did you become an Ajax fan?
It must have been a completely independent choice. I am not a born Amsterdammer, my dad wasn’t into football at all and the cousin I watched football with supported PSV. I remember really liking the classic Ajax shirt. Also, the Ajax players were young and cool. They had a sense of style, whereas players of other Dutch clubs had moustaches and bad hair. It’s exactly what many people hate about Ajax: the swagger, the arrogance, if you wish. I loved it.

What clubs, other than Ajax, do you support?
None. I do have my irrational preferences. I’ve always liked Inter more than AC Milan, Spurs more than Arsenal and oh, Telstar, from the Dutch First Division, are a lovely little cult club. But there’s only one club I support. I just really love football culture. I can see the beauty of almost every club.

What is your best Ajax moment ever?
I could come up with something lame like Patrick Kluivert’s winning goal in the 1995 Champions League final, but more essential to me was the moment I stepped through the turnstiles for my very first Ajax match, Ajax v Feyenoord, in 1983. The people, the buzz, the smell, the first glimpse of the pitch, the Ajax players doing their warm-up exercises. Magic. Love at first sight. I wish I could go to Ajax for the first time once again.

Do you have any dream or wish in relation to Ajax?
I saw my club win the European Cup Winners Cup, the UEFA Cup, the Champions League, the European Super Cup and the World Cup in less than nine years’ time, so as a football supporter I can be very, very grateful indeed. I just hope Ajax will continue to be Ajax and that we won’t ever sell ourselves to anyone. Let’s do it our way, with our style of football, and just see what happens.

What is your favorite Ajax home shirt?
The ones from the 1960s and early 1970s were great, but the best one I actually saw them play in must be the 1986-1987 kit from Kappa: plain, simple with a red V-neck.

Best Ajax shirts according to Menno Pot

What is your favorite Ajax away shirt?
I like ‘em simple. One colour, no frills, no shiny designs or patters, just plain and simple. The best Ajax away kits were blue. I liked the light blue away strips from the mid-1980s, but the 2002-2003 Adidas one was okay, too, That one officially had a light blue jersey with navy blue shorts, but I liked it better when they started wearing light blue shorts with it, same colour as the jersey.

How many Ajax shirts do you have?
About fifteen: nine or ten home, five or six away. But I have to admit… they’re in a cardboard box in the basement. I don’t wear match shirts anymore these days, the only exception in recent years being 15 May 2011, Ajax vs Twente, a direct battle for the Dutch title, which we won. Everyone at the Amsterdam ArenA wore home colours that day. So did I.

What is your favorite 2013/14 shirt, other than Ajax?
I think Spurs look quite sharp this season with the blue and white neck-taping. Retro. Nice. In the Dutch Eredivisie I particularly like Vitesse this season. They have a classic shirt: yellow and black vertical stripes. This season’s version is very simple, old-skool and there’s no sponsor name on it. Lovely.

What is your favorite all-time shirt, other than Arsenal?
I like Inter’s black and blue and River Plate’s diagonal red stripe. Class.

Next is Marcel Stephan, better known as Gogme United

Since when do you follow Ajax?
All my life. The first time in a stadium I was 11. I watched FC Amsterdam – Ajax Amsterdam.

Why did you become an Ajax fan?
Genetically determined. My grandfather was a member Ajax and was always found at Ajax. He has even been in an Ajax book because he, along with former goalkeeper Gerrit Keizer for extra food made during the war. (they both were greengrocer)

What clubs, other than Ajax, do you support?
In a number of countries I have a favorite team, I follow some more than others. But I’m not doing much effort to watch them on TV. If I see the results from England, I always check first what the Spurs have done (if I do not already know).

What is your best Ajax moment ever?
Impossible question! When we were growing up in the 80s we always talked about how great it must have been to follow Ajax in the early 70s. Before I realized I had those times myself with the three European Cups Ajax won in 1987, 1992 and 1995. I have seen all these finals live in the stadium.

Do you have any dream or wish in relation to Ajax?
That Cruyff and Van Gaal stop arguing with each other and join forces.

What is your favorite Ajax home shirt?
All Ajax shirts without advertising and / or ridiculous adidas stripes. Perhaps the Ajax home kit from Le Coq Sportif from the early 80s, when Cruyff returned to Ajax.

Best Ajax kits according Marcel Stephan

What is your favorite Ajax away shirt?
Again, shirts without advertising are the most beautiful. I do like the test pattern shirt from the 80s with TDK. That shirt was so horribly ugly that it became beautiful. I was once in a suburb of Dublin when I saw a red-haired boy in that shirt. Who had bought it specifically because he found it so beautiful. There were many boys around with that shirt. I found that pretty cool.

I also liked the light blue Ajax away kit by le Coq Sportif (TDK sponsoring), mainly because of the great goal by Jesper Olsen in the Kuip.

How many Ajax shirts do you have?
Two, I have a Kappa shirt with number 9 from the Ajax dressing room. And I have a cotton retro shirt, no brand.

What is your favorite 2013/14 shirt, other than Ajax?
The PSV Eindhoven away kit. And the Vitesse Arnhem home kit. The latter mainly due to the fact that it is a very classic shirt without advertisement.

What is your favorite ‘all time’ shirt, other than Ajax?
I once got a Fluminense shirt, which I find very cool. But this question is impossible to answer. I like the Inter kit, Celtic, West Ham, all black and white striped clubs and – especially for my mother – the Roma shirt. Perhaps that is the most beautiful.

Next up is Toby Verweij from Ajax forum and fan site Ajax Totaal

Since when do you follow Ajax?
Since the late 70′s when a kid at the kindergarten (pre-school) asked me which team I supported. I wasn’t really aware of all things Ajax and collecting things from the club. I started to follow the club very intense from 1983 onwards.

Why did you become an Ajax fan?
First, because of the beautiful shirt. The beautiful red track and the beautiful old logo. Since 1983, I am really going to delve into the history of the club and my love for Ajax has only grown since that moment. Ajax has its own distinct culture of attacking football and the role of it’s youth academy. It is no coincidence that Ajax played in all european finals with at least 60 percent players from the academy or even 80 – percent. And the farther Ajax drifted from that philosophy, the worse Ajax played and drifted financially. Especially after the Bosman ruling and the failed youth products during the period of Co Adriaanse as head coach. Now Ajax seems to have passed by the much-discussed ‘Velvet Revolution’ by Johan Cruyff and old players like Dennis Bergkamp, Frank de Boer and Wim Jonk. Finally again 6 or 7 players from the academy play in Ajax 1 and technical leadership consists of Ajax with knowledge.

What clubs, other than Ajax, do you support?
The Ajax reserves in the Dutch second league and Dutch football in general. No specific other club.

What is your best Ajax moment ever?
I have many. But I think the most special moment was surely winning the European Cup Winners Cup in 1987. It was a time when no one expected a Dutch club would win. Ajax played in the period 1987 to 1996 5 European finals.

Do you have any dream or wish in relation to Ajax?
I hope that Ajax will return to the top of Europe and win a final again. For clubs from other countries like England, Italy or Spain it is very hard to compete. But Ajax did manage to win against Barcelona recently. A team with many young talented players and a great football philosophy of playing to win with attractive football.

What is your favorite Ajax home shirt?
The 1979/1980 Ajax home kit by Le Coq Sportif. No advertising on front. The old Ajax logo and further no frills. Greatest Ajax kit ever.

The best Ajax kits by Toby Verweij

What is your favorite Ajax away shirt?
The white Ajax away kit for the 1981/82 season. Like the Ajax home shirt I like it being without sponsor messages and the old logo of the club.

How many Ajax shirts do you have?
About 15.

What is your favorite 2013/14 shirt, other than Ajax?
None.

What is your favorite ‘all time’ shirt, other than Ajax?
Recognizable and iconic shirts like the Celtic shirt.

Next is Willem Gonggrijp. Willem runs the blog BergkampFlick and writes for other blogs as well.

Since when do you follow Ajax?
I’ve been following Ajax since the ’98 World Cup. Specifically: When Dennis Bergkamp scored THAT goal against Argentina (which I wrote about here: http://bergkampflick.wordpress.com/2013/02/14/my-guest-blog-on-northlondonisred/). I wanted to find out all about him, and after hearing he played for Arsenal, people told me that he used to play for Ajax. As soon as the season started, I began watching Arsenal on Match Of The Day and Ajax on its Dutch equivalent.

Why did you become an Ajax fan?
As I said, it started with Dennis Bergkamp, but afterwards it was the style of football that made me fell in love. I started doing presentations on the club when I had to do one in primary school, and through that I learned a lot about the club’s history.

What clubs, other than Ajax, do you support?
Arsenal.

What is your best Ajax moment ever?
My best moment was when Frank de Boer won his first title at Ajax. I hadn’t seem them play proper Ajax football for years, so ‘having my Ajax back’ and seeing them win the league was incredible.

Do you have any dream or wish in relation to Ajax?
I’d love for them to start making waves in Europe once more.

What is your favorite Ajax home shirt?
I’m not really a connoisseur, but I loved the 97/98 Ajax home kit by Umbro.

The best Ajax shirts according Willem

What is your favorite Ajax away shirt?
I really liked the 12/13 Ajax away kit.

How many Ajax shirts do you have?
Just 2.

What is your favorite 2013/14 shirt, other than Ajax?
Arsenal’s away kit this season is a thing of beauty, best kit I’ve seen in years.

What is your favorite ‘all time’ shirt, other than Ajax?
Arsenal home 05/06. Beautiful colour.

Next is Marien ‘Marienho’ Brethouwer. Mariens runs the website Soccer Corner.

Since when do you follow Ajax?
I follow Ajax since I was around 10 years old. I was in a local record store with my mother where I noticed a VHS tape called ‘Nr. 14′, a documentary about Johan Cruijff. I knew my father really liked Johan Cruijff and convinced my mother to buy it. Ofcourse I watched the tape a lot more than my father ever did and that really laid the foundation of my love for Ajax.

Why did you become an Ajax fan?
First of all because of their style of play, attacking football, their players, the shirts and ofcourse because they won. When I grew up Ajax won the European Cup Winners Cup, Uefa Cup and Champions League, it’s hard to ignore that :D

What clubs, other than Ajax, do you support?
I really only follow Ajax at this moment, I follow football in general, but I can’t remember watching an entire football match on the television that didn’t include Ajax for the last 10 years.

What is your best Ajax moment ever?
My greatest moment is the Patrick Kluivert goal in the final minutes of the Champions League Final against AC Milan back in 1995, this was such a great moment for a really great team. I watched that one on the television but the greatest moment I witnessed in the stadium was probably when Jari Litmanen scored the 2-0 in a 2nd group stage champions league match against AS Roma back in december 2002. Litmanen had returned to Ajax that season, didn’t really play that much because of injuries but scored a fantastic goal against Roma. We almost reached the semi finals that year with a great team with players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Rafael van der Vaart.

Do you have any dream or wish in relation to Ajax?
I really hope that we will be able to achieve European success again.

What is your favorite Ajax home shirt?
It’s one I own, an Umbro Champions League shirt from around 1998.

Marien's favorite Ajax shirts

What is your favorite Ajax away shirt?
I really like this year’s away shirt, I really like the colors and their contrast.

How many Ajax shirts do you have?
I have six ajax shirts, there was I time I bought a new home shirt every season, but I have stopped doing that :-)

What is your favorite 2013/14 shirt, other than Ajax?
That’s a hard one, I kind of like PSG’s blue shirt.

What is your favorite ‘all time’ shirt, other than Ajax?
My most favourite shirt other then an Ajax shirt would be a shirt of the dutch national team. I really love the classic ones. All orange with the black lion on it.

And last in this Ajax kit article is Shaun Kastelijn from Australia.

Since when do you follow Ajax?
My family supported Ajax and I guess I started being really interested in football and Ajax in the early/mid 90′s.

Why did you become an Ajax fan?
I was introduced to football through my father who was a supporter because my grandfather was from Amsterdam and naturally passed it down.

What clubs, other than Ajax, do you support?
My hometown club, Adelaide United and because everyone in Australia chooses an English team as a kid, I keep track of Leicester City.

What is your best Ajax moment ever?
The Champions League win in 1995 is the greatest. A notable mention to my chance meeting with Johan Cruijff the night before the match in Barcelona in October.

Do you have any dream or wish in relation to Ajax?
I dream of a fourth straight title and to continue to improve our results in Europe.

What is your favorite Ajax home shirt?
This is a tough ask. But I think the 1981/82 Ajax home kit.
